Registered apprenticeship provides hands-on experience, mentorship, and a clear pathway for Californians to enter and grow in high-paying careers. The Electrical Training Alliance of Silicon Valley (ETASV) is the largest electrical apprenticeship in Northern California with an average of 600 students and has a continuing partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).

Sonia is a 4th-year IBEW Inside Commercial Wireman Apprentice. The IBEW Inside Commercial Wireman Apprenticeship is a five-year apprenticeship program commitment and requires eight thousand hours of on-the-job training.  Apprentices must also attend classroom instruction in a local Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) trade school and upon program graduation, graduates become journeyman electricians.

A word from Sonia, an IBEW apprentice:

“After working in retail for over 10 years and moving back to San Jose from Austin, TX, I decided to go back to school. I ended up taking Air Conditioning (AIRC) 121 and AIRC 122 at San Jose Community College (SJCC), and my curiosity was sparked. I found myself drawn to electrical more than any other trade mostly because I really enjoyed the troubleshooting boards we did in class. Equipped with the knowledge I gained it was a no brainer to join the IBEW apprenticeship program. Best decision I have made.”
