Building a Culture of Care: Construction Suicide Prevention Week
Did you know that suicide is a leading cause of death among working-age adults in the United States? Among workers, construction leads major industries in the highest rates of suicide. In fact, the suicide rate for construction workers is nearly four times higher than that of the general population. A fact that underscores the need to prioritize mental health awareness for construction workers. Construction Suicide Prevention Week, September 9 -13, is a week dedicated to raising awareness about the unique challenges construction workers face that lead to a higher-than-average number of suicides, and to providing resources to help prevent those deaths. In support of leading mental health awareness in the workplace, the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has also launched a new Mental Health Resources hub webpage. This new resource hub ensures that both workers and employers know that there are resources available to support mental health. Employers are encouraged to create a culture of care that champions mental well-being and prevents the risk of suicide – not just this week but every week.
