Workers’ Compensation Claims by Injury Type
Trading Partners submit First Reports of Injury (FROIs) to the Workers’ Compensation Information System (WCIS). These first reports contain information on the type of injury or illness a worker sustains, categorized by Part of Body, Cause of Injury, and Nature of Injury. These categorized values codes are collected and organized using the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Organizations’ (WCIO) Injury Description Tables which can be found at Workers Compensation Insurance Organizations.
While these codes contain descriptions of injuries and illnesses that are recognizable, they do not represent a diagnosis from a medical care provider. WCIS collects medical diagnosis information via the Medical Billing Database. To get a complete picture of workplace injuries requires a combination of these codes, the FROI injury description, and medical diagnosis information. The number of FROI records with a given occupational disease or injury should not be quoted without further study.
