California celebrates annual Labor Rights Week

Sacramento – This week, the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) celebrated the 18th Labor Rights Week alongside Mexican Consulates throughout California. This year the event’s theme is the Year of the Indigenous Woman. DIR and its divisions, which include Cal/OSHA, the Labor Commissioner’s Office (LCO) and the Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC), participated in over 50 events throughout the state. This included both virtual programs and in-person events in cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento.

Labor Rights Week is celebrated nationally to highlight the importance of protecting all workers. In California, every worker has rights regardless of immigration status. Employers must provide a safe workplace and pay all owed wages. Injured workers are eligible for workers' compensation benefits in case of work-related injuries. Workers can find more information and resources to understand their rights on the Department of Industrial Relations webpage.

Labor Rights Week was held August 25th to August 29th and helps familiarize workers with their rights on the job and the safety measures employers are required to provide.
