Public Works Wildfire Cleanup and Rebuilding
DIR is committed to assisting contractors working on Public Works projects in the Los Angeles area impacted by wildfire.
To work on public works projects, contractors and awarding bodies must follow certain requirements to prevent violations and substantial monetary penalties.
What are Public Works projects?
Public Works is construction, alteration, demolition, installation or repair work done under contract and paid in whole or in part out of public funds. This can include pre-construction and post-construction activities related to a public works project.
What is required on Public Works projects?
All workers employed on qualifying public works projects must be paid the prevailing wage based on the location and type of work performed.
Public Works contractors and awarding bodies must be aware of the following responsibilities:
Contractors:
- Register as a public works contractor before bidding on a public works project. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in substantial monetary penalties.
- Pay prevailing wages. Failure to pay workers properly is wage theft and will result in substantial monetary penalties.
- Follow apprenticeship requirements.
- Maintain and submit certified payroll records.
Awarding bodies:
- Register public works projects with DIR.
- Obtain prevailing wage rates from DIR.
- Require proof of publics works contractor registration before accepting a bid or awarding a contract. To find actively registered contractors, use: search for contractor registrations.
