CIRCULAR LETTER E-02-01

TO: Elevator Companies and Others Concerned:

SUBJECT: Compliance to Elevator Safety Orders' Section 3121.4 [ASME A17.1 Rule 204.2a. Material for Car Enclosures, Enclosure Linings, and Floor Coverings]

Rule 204.2a states in part: "All materials exposed to the car interior and the hoistway shall be metal, laminated glass [Rule 204.lh(3)(a)], or shall conform to the following. (1) Materials in their end use configuration, other than those covered by Rules 204.2a(2), (3), and (4), shall conform to the following requirements, based on the tests conducted in accordance with the requirements of ASTM E 84, UL 723, or NFPA 255: (a) flame spread index of 0 to 75; (b) smoke development of 0 to 450."

In order to comply with Rule 204.2a, the following shall be submitted to the ERT Unit Headquarters for review: (1) Model/or Part number of the car enclosure; (2) Car enclosure drawing showing the different sections of material used in the construction of the enclosure; (3) Test results in accordance with the standards specified in Rules 204.2a(1).
